County deputies detain juveniles for attacking cars with fireworks bazookaBy Tracy Farr Two local teenagers were detained by county deputies New Years Eve for shooting fireworks at passing cars with homemade bazookas made out of PVC pipe. No one was injured, but city officials are considering banning the sale of PVC pipe to anyone under 18. "There's no telling what kind of mischief youngsters can get into with a truckload of PVC," Mayor Herbert Reese said. "I plan to bring this to the attention of our town council at the next meeting. Who knows, this may even be a situation that Homeland Security will want to know about." According to Sheriff Max Welter, the two boys were placing lit bottle rockets in the pipes and shooting them at cars from atop the railroad bridge over 1st Street. "I don't think they actually hit any of the cars they were aiming at," the sheriff said, "but we told them in no uncertain terms there were better ways to celebrate New Years." A concerned citizen reported the two boys to the sheriff's office who won't release their names because of their age. "I'm not condoning what they did, but when we were kids, we did crazy things too," Sheriff Welter said. "As for banning the sale of PVC pipe to underage kids because it may be a national security problem -- well, I think that's going a bit overboard. But what do I know. I'm just a small-town country sheriff." |
