Crappie County observes Earth Hour
By Tracy Farr Businesses and residents of Crappie County observed Earth Hour Saturday, but got a little more than they bargained for. Earth Hour was an hour-long event where people and businesses all over the world turned off their lights Saturday to show concern about global warming. The event lasted from 8 and 9 p.m. and almost everybody in Crappie County and Stinky Creek participated according to Lester Jennings, local Earth Hour coordinator. "I was really surprised that so many of our friends and neighbors got involved," Jennings said. "I think Mr. Reeves got a little bit more involved than he needed to, but his heart was in the right place." According to an official at Crappie County Electrical Co-op, Sammy Reeves, one of their night electrical technicians, pulled the plug on all the generators, sending Crappie County into a complete blackout. "Not only were the lights out all over the county, but so were the refrigerators, air conditioners and hot water heaters," said the official who wished to remain anonymous. "Everything would probably have been fine, but Mr. Reeves forgot to put the generators back online before the residents starting turning their lights back on." When Reeves finally pushed the button to put the county back on the grid, the surge in electricity blew every transformer within a five-mile radius of Stinky Creek. It took Co-op workers 10 hours to restore electricity to the county. "Earth Hour is a wonderful way for us to show we take global warming seriously," Jennings said. "I just hope Mr. Reeves doesn't get into too much trouble. He did help us reduce our carbon footprint, and the less footprints we make on this here planet, the better." |
