Local man wins fiddling contestBy Tracy Farr Local resident Bill Stevens beat out 47 other men Saturday to win the U.S. Amateur Fiddlers contest held in Stinky Creek. Stevens is now eligible to compete in the International Fiddlers contest which occurs the first weekend in March in The Netherlands. "I didn't really do very much," the soft-spoken Stevens said. "I just fiddled with this and fiddled with that; and before I knew it, they were placing a ribbon around my neck." According to his wife, Stevens became accomplished at fiddling by piddling. "All these years I complained about the amount of time he piddled in the garage," Mary Stevens said. "I never knew that his piddling would lead to a fiddling award. I'm really proud of him." During the contest, the 47 men were led to garages where they were required to fiddle while they piddled. The piddler who accomplished the most productive fiddling was declared the winner. "At first I just fiddled with the garage door. It was a little squeaky," recalled Stevens. "It was just a piddling little squeak, but it bugged me. Later, I piddled my way over to a broken down TV set and fiddled with it until I got it working again. And I guess that's why I was chosen the winner." Stevens comes from a family of piddlers and fiddlers. "My dad would come home from work, eat a bite of supper, then head to the garage to piddle and fiddle with whatever was out there," Stevens said. "He'd fiddle with the lawn mower until he got it running then he'd go piddle around the attic for awhile. He loved to fiddle with the Christmas lights. He was just always doing something. If he wasn't fiddling then he was piddling. I guess I just come by it naturally." |
