Stinky Creek floods Stinky Creek

By Tracy Farr
Editor, The Daily Spittoon

The meandering Stinky Creek, which usually flows benignly through parts of Stinky Creek the town, meandered over its banks Wednesday flooding several businesses and homes. Mayor Herbert Reese said nobody was injured and that cleanup has already begun.

"Last week was just a wild week weather-wise," Mayor Reese said. "When I predicted there would be more winter weather, I never imagined it would be like this. Hopefully the bad stuff is out of the way and we can now look forward to some better weather."

The Stinky Creek flooded its banks around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and made its way through the Crappie County Sheriff's office, Hank's Department store and several houses on Elm Street. The water never got more than 6 inches deep and very little damage was done.

"I think mostly our carpet got wet, but other than that, we made it through just fine," Sheriff Welter said. "We're going to let some contractors repair it all before we go back in. Until that time, we're going to set up house in Fred's Barbershop. Might as well -- that's the best place in town to find out what people are doing anyways."

Only the southwest corner of Hank's Department store flooded which was a blessing in disguise according to Hank Rogers, owner of the store.

"The water only got into our storage area, and the only thing it hurt was some old clothes that we hadn't got rid of for 20 years," Hank said. "I guess we were just keeping it around until the fashion came back into fashion. But I guess now it never will. Oh well, just as well. Now we'll have more room for other things to keep for 20 years."

Hank's Department store will be open as usual during the cleanup. Anyone needing the sheriff's office should call Fred's Barbershop. Let the phone ring a bit because Fred may be in the middle of cutting someone's hair.
