Stinkers almost win HomecomingBy Tracy Farr Stinker fans have been waiting 40 years for their Fighting Stinkers to bring home a victory. They almost got their wish Friday at Homecoming, but the Stinkers lost to the Ravens 10-13 in the closest game in a decade. "It looked like we were going to make history tonight," Coach Fred Bumgardner said. "We came so close, but not close enough. The boys were really playing hard, and they put on a good showing, but it wasn't quite good enough. I'm still proud of them. We'll just come back next week and try again." The game was the end of a week-long series of events to celebrate Stinky Creek Homecoming. Students had dress up days, a bonfire was lit without incident and the Parade of Mums went off without a hitch. "The Parade of Mums is my favorite part of Homecoming week," Principal Ed Terry said. "The mums were exquisite, the girls looked beautiful, and the young men who foot the bill for the mums looked proud even though they had probably spent their life savings to make their dates happy." Terry estimates that more than $10,000 was spent on the mums. "That's a lot of money to spend on something that's going to be worn on just one night," Terry said, "but I guess it's all about making memories. And good memories are worth any price." The Stinkers have an off week this Friday. Their next game will be against the Bandits at Bandit Stadium on Oct. 19. Game time is 7:30. |
