Homecoming week in Stinky Creek

By Tracy Farr
Editor, The Daily Spittoon

Stinky Creek High School has a variety of events planned for this week in anticipation of Homecoming 2007. The game may not be much to write home about, but the mums will be!

"This is going to be the best homecoming week we've ever put together," High School Principal Ed Terry said.  "Every day will be a themed dress-up day for the students, we'll get to have a bonfire this year, the Parade of Mums will lead us right to game time, and we'll be honoring the Class of '67 with a special presentation during halftime.  It's going to be an exciting time in our school's history."

According to Terry, the themes for the dress-up days will be:  Monday - Fishing Waiters Day;  Tuesday - Bring Your Pet Day; Wednesday - Walk Like A Duck Day; Thursday -  Talk Like A Principal Day; and Friday - Pray For A Victory At Tonight's Game Day.

Students and local residents can start bringing wood, cardboard boxes, broken tables, and other combustionable items to the field just east of Stinker Stadium.

"In the past, the bonfire was a great time to get rid of all those items that have been taking up room around the house," Terry said.  "We just ask that residents don't bring old paint, plastics, and cans of gasoline.  We all remember what happened in 1998 and we don't want it to happen again."

The Parade of Mums is an annual event that starts at the square and ends at the stadium.  Participants don beautiful hand-made mums and vie for prizes.  There is a prize for the most beautiful mum, the biggest mum, the mum with the longest ribbons, the most expensive mum, the oldest mum, the tackiest mum, and the heaviest mum.

"Last year, 11th-grader Doris Handelmeir needed a wheelbarrow to carry her mum," Terry said.  "It weighed in at 107 pounds, was 297 inches long, and is mounted in the foyer up at the school.  Boy is it a sight to see."

The school will honor the Class of 1967 by unveiling a brass plaque located at the front gates of Stinker Stadium.  The plaque recognizes the academic and athletic achievements of the class.  It makes special reference to the fact that the Fighting Stinkers won their last game in 1967.

"We're hoping the return of the Class of '67 as well as the plaque will give our boys the edge this week," Terry said.  "If this doesn't do it, nothing will."

The bonfire will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night; The Parade of Mums will start at 6 p.m. Friday; and game time is 7:30.  Come out and support the Stinkers -- please!
