The Stinky Creek High
School Marching Band was in fine form Friday as they out played, out performed,
and out marched the visiting Cyclone Band from Wallupus High School.
Even though they only have 27 members, the Marching Band
from Stinker Land historically have always put on a good show and Friday was no
exception.
"We saw they were lining up for a straight 6-to5 drill so
we pulled back our bass drummer and hit them with some adjusted steps," Stinker
Band Director Marty Hester said after the game. "They didn't even know
what hit them."
While the Cyclones spent most of their time marching from
end zone to end zone, the Stinkers hit the crowd with straight-ahead sound.
"A winning band has got to hit 'em high and hit 'em hard,"
Hester said. "If we're not knocking the audience out of their seats, we're
not doing our job."
The Stinkers, led on the field by drum major Mark Stone,
were able to average 100 notes per minute, 210 steps per song, with only three errors. Lead
trumpeter Max Welch smacked four out of five high Cs up to the press box and bass
drummer Harold Handley scrambled 20 yards for a double paradiddle that had never
been performed by a Texas bass drummer during regular season action.
"We've got some really talented players on our team,"
Hester said. "As long as we keep our forms in tune and our heads tight, we
have the opportunity to go all the way this season."
In football action, the Fighting Stinkers extending their
losing streak by falling 8-57 to the Cyclones.
