Poetry night at Stinky Creek Saloon

By Tracy Farr
Editor, The Daily Spittoon

Bud Henderson and the Stinky Creek Saloon is once again sponsoring the 37th Annual "Poetry on the Back Porch" contest to be held Friday on the back porch of the Saloon. Judging starts are 3 p.m. and contestants are reminded to keep it clean -- no dirty limericks.

"Poetry is one of those things that rarely gets the attention it deserves," Henderson said. "That's why I think it's so important to have this contest. Also, it's just plain fun to watch your friends and neighbors get all weak-kneed on stage trying to recite the darn things."

"Poetry can be about anything," Henderson said. "Cats, dogs, coffee, the sun going up, the sun going down, the sun NOT coming up because of clouds, clouds, how clouds are made -- the list is endless."

Last year's winning entry was titled "Yes! I See You." It is a poem about motorcycles and the people who ride them.

"It wasn't the greatest poem in the world, but the guy who recited it -- I can't remember his name at the moment -- he came all dressed up like a motorcycle gang member," Henderson said. "He acted the whole thing out and it was amazing."

Henderson says that all types of poetry entries are acceptable, except for bawdy limericks about priests, women and donkeys.

"We ask all our contestants to remember this is a family event and their poetry should be respective of that," Henderson said. "Even though we all might enjoy a verse about a night in Paris' Hilton, we've got to remember there will be kiddies drinking root beer in the audience and they don't need to hear those kinds of things."

Anyone interested in entering the "Poetry on the Back Porch" contest should call Bud at the Saloon. Let the phone ring for awhile because Bud may be in the kitchen elbow deep in chicken fried steak.
