Getting to the prom is half the fun
By Tracy Farr Stinky Creek High School students danced the night away at the junior, senior prom Saturday, but it wasn't the moves on the dance floor that everyone is talking about. More than 80 couples tripped the light fantastic Saturday, but it was their transportation TO the prom that was the highlight of the evening. "It's hard to believe how creative these students can get," Hillary Beckham, high school English teacher and prom coordinator said. "All year long they whine and complain about essays and reports, turning in assignments that lack imagination and creativity, and then they turn around and surprise the socks off you. It's just mind blowing." Some of the prom couples arrived in stretch limos and sports cars, but 17-year-old Randy Stout and his date, Veronica Hall, arrived in the back of a dump truck. The two, sitting on burlap sacks, slid out the back of the truck right into the front door of the high school gym, the site of this years' prom. Buddy Randle and his date, Jessica Finkle, arrived at the prom in a llama-drawn cart. Everybody kept suspicious eyes on the llama, but no incidents occurred. In respect for the planet, Jeff Spall and his date, Debbie Hinder, walked to the prom carrying signs that said, "Save The Planet -- Walk to the Prom." The two received a standing ovation from parents who had gathered to watch the procession. Ralphie Stewart and his date, Liz Bates, pulled up to the prom in a rickshaw pulled by Ralphie's father, Ted Stewart. "It's amazing what stupid things we parents go through just for our kids," Mr. Stewart said. "I hope he enjoyed being pulled here by his old man because I'm not ever doing this again. Next time, he can ride to the prom on a unicycle for all I care." Other modes of transportation included a tandem bicycle, go-carts, a pair of his and hers riding lawnmowers, a hippie school bus, roller skates, a dune buggy and a hearse. "I never would have thought of using a hearse to get to the prom," Beckham said. "These kids are just amazing -- weird, but amazing." |
