Senator waits to see where he stands

By Tracy Farr
Editor, The Daily Spittoon

State Rep. Ralph Long recently mailed a survey to his constituents asking their views on issues ranging from crime and drugs to property tax relief. The senator, who is up for re-election next year, is anxiously waiting the return of the surveys so he will know where he stands on the issues.

"This is the first time I've used the survey," Long said. "It will be nice to finely know what issues are important to me as well as the people I serve."

According to Long's aide Clint Clerk, the survey was not meant to show where Long stands on the issues.

"We won't know where Long stands until we get the surveys back," said Clerk, "but you can rest assured that he will stand wherever his constituents want him to stand in order to get re-elected."

Long is currently the voice of Stinky Creek High School's Fighting Stinkers.  He does play-by-play announcing during the game, adding a bit of his own personality to make the game interesting.

"It's been a wonderful experience for me," Long said.  "Talking to several thousand people at one time about things I know absolutely nothing about certainly gives me an edge during election years.  I'm even thinking about doing this as a career when my political days are over.  We'll just have to wait and see what the future holds -- and more importantly, what the survey says."
