SCISD closes for Snow Day

By Tracy Farr

Stinky Creek Independent School District sent students home early Friday because of snow -- not because there were heaping piles of the white stuff, but because a heaping pile of students didn't show up for school.

"We were going to have school as usual,"  said Marcus Spilling, superintendent of Stinky Creek ISD, "but when 75 percent of the students don't show up, it's kind of difficult."

A cold front dropped several inches of snow on the area early Friday morning, but by the afternoon it had completely melted.

"When we have to make a decision about whether or not to close the school because of weather, we drive the streets early in the morning looking for icy roads and bridges," Spilling said. "Yes, Friday morning it looked like we were having a blizzard, but it wasn't cold enough to stick, and it wasn't cold enough to make driving conditions hazardous. So, there was really no reason for the students to stay home."

But that's not what some local parents believe.

"What does he mean by saying there was no reason to stay home?" said Meredith Bane, mother of two elementary students. "It was snowing, and that's reason enough."

"Texans very rarely get to see snow, and when we do, we should take advantage of it," agreed Betsy Rhine who has a daughter in junior high. "What's wrong with declaring a Snow Day, even if the roads are drivable? I think our children are much more likely to remember the fun they had playing in the snow, than they ever would remember what day someone signed some treaty in some foreign country."

"And if we did send them to school, do you know what they'd be thinking about?" asked Roger Simms, the father of a kindergartner. "They'd not be thinking about school, they'd be wondering why they can't go out and play in the snow. So if the students aren't going to get something out of their classes, then they might as well be home having snowball fights."

'Before I vote on the next Texas governor, I'm going to see where he or she stands when it comes to Snow Days," Simms added. "It's an issue that is never discussed, but it better be if they want my vote."
