County judge hears venison suit

By Tracy Farr

A Stinky Creek ISD bus driver, who is suing the school district in the hopes of keeping a 12-point buck he accidentally killed with his school bus in November, finally had his day in court Tuesday.

Stanley Morris, who has been driving Bus No. 6 for the last five years, argued in front of Crappie County Judge Ellen Sanders that he believes the deer is rightfully his and that he should be able to keep it.

“I accidentally killed that buck and I think I have every right to it," Morris told the judge.   "Yes, it was probably irresponsible of me to field dress it while the students waited on the bus, but I still believe I should get it."

Stinky Creek ISD Superintendent Marcus Spilling told Judge Sanders that the school should keep the deer.

"Mr. Morris is one of our finest bus drivers, but he hit the deer while driving a school bus," Spilling said.  "Some of those students were mortified when Mr. Morris tied the deer to the hood of his bus.  We could have very easily asked for his resignation, but we didn't.  I think we've been very fair to him."

Judge Sanders is expected to make a decision on the case within the next couple of weeks.  Until then, the venison will remain in the school’s walk-in freezer.
